Save Time, Save Your Back with a Swing Away
Improve your Powermatic 3520 A or B
The Powermatic 3520 is a wonderful lathe. Among its best features is the ability to slide the headstock to the opposite end of the lathe bed for turning bowls. When doing this though the tailstock must be removed to clear the way for the headstock. The tailstock weighs approximately fifty pounds (50 lb). If you're in great shape you might consider this chore just an addition to your exercise routine. But, for the rest of us lifting on and off the heavy tailstock might result in any number of possible strains, pulls, back problems and smashed fingers and toes.

Save Your Back with a Swing Away
The Swing Away eliminates these possible problems because with a Swing Away in place you never need to lift, remove or replace your tailstock. All you do is slide the tailstock onto the Swing Away then rotate the Swing Away and tailstock out of your way. When you need the tailstock again all you do is swing it back around, slide the tailstock back in place and you are ready to go in less than a minute.
No Lathe Modifications Needed
The Swing Away bolts to the tailstock end of the lathe using the holes already in place for the lathe bed extension. The stop pin supplied with the Powermatic 3520 is moved from the end of the bed to the end of the Swing Away. You align the top of the Swing Away with the lathe bed ways and you are ready to go. Installation generally takes less than fifteen minutes.
Safety is the Key
For safety purposes we have included a locking pin that keeps the Swing Away securely in either the closed or open position. Also
for safety the Powermatic's safety pin that keeps you from pulling the tailstock or headstock off the end of the lathe is relocated to the end of the Swing Away. This keeps you from pulling the tailstock off the end of the Swing Away. The picture on the right shows the Swing Away being rotated. Notice the additional Delrin pads on the Swing Away mounting bracket. These pads keep the rotation motion smooth and easy.
WARNING: Be sure to lock your tailstock
on the Swing Away before you
rotate it to the back of the lathe.

Installation is simple.
- Thread the two 3/8”-16 X 1” bolts into the holes provided by Powermatic in the end of the lathe.
- Snug the bolts but do not tighten at this time. Using a rubber mallet or other non-marring tool move the unit up or down until the tailstock slides on and off easily. This may take a couple of gentle taps to align it to the top of the ways.
- When you are satisfied tighten the bolts and you'll never again have to lift that 50lbs tailstock again!
(In some instances you may need to make a slight adjustment to the locking mechanism of the tailstock to make sure that the tailstock lock works on the Swing Away.)
